Simulation exercise: Peste des petits ruminants in Kazakhstan

Dr Samat Tyulegenov, Delegate to WOAH and Deputy Chairman of the Committee of Veterinary Control and Surveillance of the Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Kazakhstan, informed WOAH that the veterinary service of the Republic of Kazakhstan conducted a simulation exercise on Peste des petits ruminants. The exercise took place from 7th to 9th of December 2022 on Sandyk-Tal farm of Zhambyl rural district, Merki district, Zhambyl region.

The simulation exercise included theoretical and practical training of personnel from the Regional territorial inspection, akimat (Governor’s Office of Zhambyl region), Republican veterinary laboratory and Republican anti-epizootic squad.

The objectives of simulation exercise were:

  • To test and assess practical implementation of control measures in case of suspicion of an PPR outbreak.
  • To test the capacity to operationally respond to a potential occurrence of the disease.
  • To evaluate ability of field staff to carry out clinical examination and epidemiological survey.
  • To assess the ability of responsible staff to take and package samples for laboratory examination as well as to ensure appropriate storage and transport conditions.
