Simulation exercise: Infestation with Aethina tumida (Small hive beetle) in Panama

Dr Bredio Velasco Denvers, National Director, Animal Health Department, Ministry of Agricultural Development of Panama, informed the OIE that a simulation exercise on infestation with Aethina tumida (Small hive beetle) will take place in the community of Volcán, district of Bugada, province of Chiriquí, Republic of Panama, from 21 to 23 September 2016.

The objectives of this simulation exercise, organised by the National Animal Health Department (DINASA) are the following:

1. Assess the response of the veterinarians and assistants of DINASA regarding the preparation and the response when facing the presence of infestation with Aethina tumida (Small hive beetle);
2. Strengthen at technical level veterinarians and assistants on important economic diseases of honey bees, specifically on infestation with Aethina tumida (Small hive beetle);
3. Train personnel, with functions in decision making and in the implementation of response activities to emergencies, to the handling of crisis situation and management of the information.

The simulation exercise will include table-top and field activities.
