Simulation exercise: Foot and mouth disease in Kazakhstan

Dr Samat Tyulegenov, Delegate to WOAH and Deputy Chairman of the Committee of Veterinary Control and Surveillance of the Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Kazakhstan, informed WOAH that the veterinary service of the Republic of Kazakhstan will conduct a simulation exercise on Foot and mouth disease. The exercise will take place on 26 January 2023 at “B.Konysbayev” customs checkpoint, Saryagash district, Turkestan region.

This simulation exercise will include the theoretical and practical training of staff members exercising and testing the warning capacity, early response organisation, management, and organisation of the Official Veterinary Service.

The simulation exercise aims to:

  • Identify the strengths and weaknesses of the existing Contingency plan for Foot and mouth disease,
  • Test and evaluate the practical implementation of control measures in case of suspicion of a Foot and mouth disease outbreak,
  • Test the capacity to respond to a potential occurrence of the disease.

The event  will allow assessing the ability of staff to respond to Foot and mouth disease outbreaks as part of the activities of the Contingency plan, and to evaluate their ability to carry out epidemiological survey, take samples and package samples for laboratory examination.
