Simulation exercise: Avian Influenza in Nicaragua

From 13 to 17 March 2023

Dr. Wilmer Juarez, Delegate of Nicaragua to WOAH, informed WOAH that the Institute of Agricultural Protection and Health (IPSA) of Nicaragua, will conduct a national simulation exercise on Avian Influenza. The activity will take place from 13 to 17 March 2023 in the city of Granada, Nicaragua. This simulation exercise is part of the continuous training process of the Nicaraguan Veterinary Services.

The specific objectives are:

  • To test the response capacity of public institutions, and official and private veterinary services to respond to the possible introduction of avian influenza into the country.
  • Strengthen biosecurity and epidemiological surveillance measures related to the prevention of avian influenza.
  • Strengthen technical capacities and form national rapid response teams.
  • Validate the emergency response plan.

Ninety professionals will participate in this simulation exercise, including administrative personnel from the Institute of Agricultural Protection and Health and Veterinary Doctors from the Official Veterinary Service; Quarantine, Food Safety, Traceability, and Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory; institutions of the National System of Production, Consumption and Commerce; Ministry of Health; National System for Disaster Prevention, Mitigation and Response (SINAPRED); Nicaraguan Army; National Police; International Regional Organization for Agricultural Health (OIRSA); Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO); Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA); World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH), and private enterprise and producers.
