Simulation exercise: African swine fever in Canada

5 May 2023

Dr Mary-Jane Ireland, Delegate to WOAH and Chief Veterinary Officer for Canada with the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA), Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, informed WOAH that a simulation exercise for African swine fever will take place on 5 May 2023. The exercise, “AFRICAN SWINE FEVER EXERCISE”, is a National table top simulation involving federal and provincial Ministries of Agriculture and key stakeholders from the hog industry (hog processors and producers) in Canada. The exercise will be led by Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada and CFIA.

The purpose of the exercise is to identify gaps in preparedness for Federal, Provincial, and Territorial  governments, and in hog processors’ and producers’ (industry) plans to depopulate and dispose of surplus hogs in the event of an African swine fever outbreak. This exercise will not focus on disease control, eradication or zoning issues and is specific to issues related to hogs surplus to market demands.
