The Veterinary Laboratory and Field Manual

“What a fantastic resource…
– it’s got pretty much everything you need in there in one place and is still small enough that you can lug it around with you;
– it isn’t overly technical i.e. it has just the right level of detail such that the important things are not lost, as is often the case with these technical manuals, is logically structured and easy to find your way around, and;
– the pictures paint a thousand words.”

Description

While there are more capable diagnostic laboratories now than in the past, it remains evident that these services have often had a limited impact on the wellbeing of farmers in isolated rural communities or on the health and productivity of their livestock. Farmer and community contact remains predominantly with animal health extension services at the district level where resources are generally limited and laboratory support and facilities are poor. The quality of the service provided depends on the level of training and experience of the staff, the availability of resources and on fostering good communication between field and laboratory based staff. In many cases the availability of training opportunities and suitable text books is restricted to staff based at well-resourced central and urban facilities. Despite wider access to the internet and a proliferation of on line learning opportunities, there remains a need for a general handbook to cover commonly used procedures for animal health and veterinary laboratory staff working in remote areas. This updated handbook aims to provide an easy to follow summary of the laboratory techniques and sample collection guidelines which will be of practical value for routine diagnostic work in small regional and district veterinary laboratories.
