1:30pm - 9:00pm (GMT+1:00)
Barbados

When: 7 – 8 February 2023

What: The sixth meeting of the Global Leaders Group (GLG) on Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) will take place in Barbados and will be the first in-person meeting of the GLG.

Who: The sixth meeting of the GLG is hosted by GLG Chair, Her Excellency Mia Amor Mottley, Prime Minister of Barbados, and will be attended by GLG members and Principals of the Quadripartite organizations both in-person and virtually. The GLG is comprised of world leaders and experts from across sectors working together to accelerate political action on AMR based on the One Health approach and achieve optimal and sustainable health outcomes for people, animals and ecosystems. The GLG collaborates globally with governments, agencies, civil society and the private sector.

The Quadripartite Joint Secretariat (QJS) on Antimicrobial Resistance, a joint effort by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the World Health Organization (WHO), the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), provides secretariat support for the GLG.

Why: During its meeting, the GLG will cover critical issues in the response to AMR, including financing, research and development, integrated surveillance, the role of the private sector, AMR and the environment, animal health and galvanizing political action to address AMR. The discussion will inform the process leading up to the 2024 UNGA high-level meeting on AMR at which the GLG will press for bold and specific commitments by member states.

The GLG will formally welcome five new members during its sixth meeting in Barbados. The new members – selected and appointed after a nomination process in 2022 and announced on 1 February 2023 – bring diverse expertise across One Health sectors including human, animal, plant and environmental health. They will strengthen the GLG’s efforts to galvanize political action to address AMR.

How: The sixth meeting of the GLG is a closed meeting. A formal meeting report discussing meeting outcomes will be available on the GLG website after the meeting.
