Simulation exercise: Foot and mouth disease in Brazil-12

11 to 17 August

Dr Geraldo Marcos De Moraes, Director of the Department of Animal Health, Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food Supply of Brazil, informed the OIE that a table-top and field simulation exercise on a foot and mouth disease (FMD) emergency will take place in São José dos Pinhais, Paraná State, from 11 to 17 August 2019, within the framework of the activities of the Permanent Veterinary Committee of the Southern Cone (CVP).

The objective of the exercise is to practice at regional level in compliance with the Technical Work Guide for the Last Stage of the Hemispheric Programme for the Eradication of Foot and Mouth Disease with a view to practising and testing the alert capacity, the organisation of an early warning response as well as the management and organisation of the Official Veterinary Services when facing an FMD emergency.

The simulation exercise will allow the review of theoretical aspects and practical training related to diagnostic, collection of samples, epidemiological investigation, traceability, information system and registration of investigations, biosafety as well as procedures of containment and eradication of FMD following the guidelines of the Contingency Plan for that disease.

For Brazil and the countries that comprise the region, this simulation exercise is an opportunity for strengthening the cooperation and response skills within a territory that has a FMD free status.
