Description

This book focuses on the historical and current status of the disease in the 23 countries with coastlines along the Mediterranean. This work is mainly based on information collected and provided by local authorities, governmental bodies and National Reference Laboratories for Brucellosis, as well as national experts in each country.

Studies from each country were reviewed and scientific output published in peer-reviewed journals was included. Moreover, data published in local languages and not internationally available have also been included. This review highlights the key elements of successful control programmes in some Mediterranean countries and the ongoing challenges and reasons for the persistent epidemics in others. As shown in this review, brucellosis still poses a significant risk in the Mediterranean region for animal and human health. Transboundary cooperation, international legislation and following European Union coordinated trans-regional eradication programmes are still needed to enable the eradication of brucellosis within the Mediterranean basin.
