South Africa: PVS Gap Analysis Report

Having faced numerous challenges in animal disease management over the past decade, including with foot-and-mouth disease, avian influenza, rift valley fever, African swine fever and African horse sickness, the Veterinary Services of South Africa requested a PVS evaluation in 2012. Although the VS were found to be relatively well resourced, fundamental structural deficiencies were highlighted in the report including: a broken chain of command, lack of technical independence and low levels of veterinarians involved in animal health (AH) or veterinary public health (VPH) field activities.
